Every Olympic dream begins in the KNZB Bad Zeist

Do you remember where you were on Thursday, August 21, 2008 around noon? Good chance you, like 2 million other Dutch people, sat glued to the screen to watch the exciting Olympic water polo final. In a thrilling and spectacular match against the United States, the Orange women dragged a historic gold medal from the fire. Coach Robin van Galen, striker Danielle de Bruijn, captain Yasemin Smit and all other players at once became Dutch celebrities ...

The basis for the gold medal was laid in the woods of Zeist. More specifically, in the pool and the nearby seminar of the KNVB Sports Centre, where the national water polo selections of the KNZB have been training for decades. The Orange women, leading up to the Olympic Games in Beijing, each spent thousands of hours in Zeist.

In early 2009, the KNZB got the opportunity to operate the pool and the seminar itself. The KNZB has jumped at that proposal. With the 'master-plan accommodations', we encourage clubs to play an active role in the exploitation of 'their' pool. With the knowledge and experience that we now gather by operating the KNZB Bad Zeist, we can advise our members even better in this area.

NTC water polo
Equally important is that the KNZB as "masters of our own house" can continue to use this central training location for the top programs of our national (youth) teams. It is, after all, the KNZB that, in cooperation with the city of Utrecht, the KNVB and several other partners, has launched the National Training Center (NTC) water polo in Zeist. With that, we offer talented water polo players the opportunity to become international professionals, and perhaps new Olympic heroes. Besides the use of the swimming pool, athletes may also use the brand new gym, which has been built on the location of the former instruction pool. There is also a small room  for team meetings and video analysis. Access to the seminar is also possible, so athletes can rest or study between trainings.

The road to 2012, 2016…2028
The Paralympic swimming team is a regular user of the KNZB Bad Zeist, as is 'Waterpolo Opleidings Centrum Talent Centraal' and various swimming and water polo clubs in the region. But the Orange water polo teams are obviously the main users. Since Beijing 2008 we know that dreams can become reality, as a result of years of training. Just like Danielle and Yasemin, many future generations will try to realise their dreams. The completely renovated KNZB Bad Zeist offers them all facilities to do so! On the road to the European Championships in Eindhoven in 2012, new Olympic water polo success in London in 2012, Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and perhaps in Amsterdam in 2028!
